Description
The new IWS Directory of Certified Business Development Companies and Community Development Financial Institutions gives contact information for more than 1,300 sources of business development assistance and community development financial assistance.
A central mission of the listed companies and financial institutions is to help businesses that operate or seek to operate in areas that have been traditionally underserved, such as low-income, rural, and inner city areas.
Entries enable you to identify and contact key decisionmakers quickly by name, address, telephone number, website, and type of organization.
The Directory includes:
- All Business Development Companies (CDCs) certified by the United States Small Business Administration (SBA)
- All Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) certified by the United States Department of the Treasury
What Is a CDC?
Business Development organizations and Community Development organizations may both be referred to by the acronym “CDC.” This can cause some confusion.
The meaning of CDC differs by context:
- Certified Development Companies (CDCs) are nonprofit corporations approved by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to work with participating lenders such as banks to provide long-term loans to small businesses.
- Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) are banks, credit unions, community loan funds, and Community Development Corporations (CDCs), dedicated to delivering affordable lending to underserved communities. Around half of all CDFIs in the U.S. are certified by the U.S. Treasury’s CDFI Fund.
- Community Development Corporations (CDCs) are nonprofit organizations that provide programs and services to promote community development. Like CDFIs, they often focus on underserved or struggling neighborhoods. CDCs can be involved in various activities including business development, lending, real estate development, investment, and education.
